QUESTION

A client just sent me a link to a .mov file on their dropbox and whenever I click the link, the video just plays.
How do I DOWNLOAD the file, rather than just playing it?

ANSWER

Amazingly simple, actually, as of the time of this writing:
Simply add the following text to the end of the url and re-submit.

?dl=1

So, if the link sent to you was:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/########/mypowerpointFile.pptx

Simply add that ?dl=1 tag at the end:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/########/mypowerpointFile.pptx?dl=1

On a Mac, this gets even simpler, as in the OS X Email client, you can right click the link and select “Download linked file”
The file is then saved to your hard drive in the Downloads folder

You can also click the address bar in Safari, and then hold down the Alt/Option key while hitting Enter/Return, and the file will be saved to your Downloads folder.
